Why Stucco Painting Is More Demanding Than Most Exterior Work
Stucco is the dominant exterior finish on Florida homes — and for good reason. It's durable, fire-resistant, and handles the state's climate better than most alternatives. But it's also one of the more technically demanding exterior surfaces to paint correctly.
Stucco is porous by nature, which means it absorbs paint differently than smooth surfaces and requires a coating system that can bridge micro-surface variation without trapping moisture beneath the film. It cracks — hairline cracks are nearly universal on stucco that's been on a building for any length of time, and wider cracks indicate more significant movement or moisture issues that need to be addressed before painting. And it's prone to efflorescence — white, chalky deposits that migrate through the stucco as moisture moves through the substrate — which is a symptom of moisture intrusion rather than just a surface problem.
KB Painting's stucco painting process starts with a thorough surface assessment. Hairline cracks are sealed with an elastomeric caulk or patching compound before any coating is applied. Wider cracks are investigated to determine whether they indicate ongoing movement or a moisture issue. Efflorescence is treated and removed before priming — not painted over. Mildew and biological growth are cleaned and treated. The primer specified for stucco is a masonry primer that seals the porous surface and provides a stable base for the topcoat.
What Stucco Surfaces Deal With Over Time
Almost universal on Florida stucco, caused by normal thermal movement. These cracks need to be sealed before painting. Leaving them open and painting over them allows moisture to enter the substrate and produces paint failure along the crack lines within a season or two.
White, salt-like deposits that appear on stucco surfaces as moisture migrates through the substrate. Painting over efflorescence without removing it and treating the source produces immediate adhesion failure.
Common on Florida stucco, particularly on north-facing walls and shaded surfaces that stay damp. Treatment and removal before painting is standard — not optional.
Areas where previous patches were painted without adequate surface preparation, or where the patch compound and surrounding stucco have different absorption characteristics.
A powdery surface residue indicating the existing coating has reached its service life. Must be removed before new coating is applied.
