Compare the result, then the actual company
A search can show sponsored listings, map results, and website pages. Advertising is one way to reach customers; it does not replace checking the company that will do the work. Open the current business profile and website before requesting a quote.
Read reviews for detail
Look at recent and older reviews, the services described, and how the business responds when a customer reports a problem. A star rating or review count is one piece of information. Neither a high count nor a neighborhood name proves that a contractor is right for your project.
Check that a claimed credential links to the company’s actual profile. If an ad displays a badge, read the current program details in the ad instead of relying on an old logo or a promise of reimbursement on a contractor website.
Check the examples and service area
Look for photos labeled with the work shown and, where known, its location. Before-and-after images should show the same project. Several views of one home are several photos, not several completed jobs. Ask about a relevant example when considering cabinet refinishing or a detailed exterior repaint.
A city page mentioning weather or neighborhood names does not establish first-hand project experience. Confirm that the company serves your address and discuss travel, access, scheduling, and any association requirements directly.
Put the comparison in writing
Ask each contractor to identify:
- The surfaces included and any exclusions.
- Cleaning, repairs, primer, products, color, sheen, and coat plan.
- The crew, access arrangements, work schedule, and protection.
- Current insurance documentation and the relevant requirements for any regulated work in the scope.
- Price, payment terms, change approval, cleanup, and warranty coverage.
If two bids differ, compare those details before deciding why. A lower price alone does not establish poor workmanship, and a higher price alone does not prove a better specification.
